City of Portland’s Environmental Services is continuing construction on the Tabor Sewer Project in our neighborhood. This project will replace and repair aging public sewer pipe ranging from 60 to 104 years old. Repairing and replacing aging sewer pipes protects water quality, public health and the environment.
Construction Schedule
Crews will begin to replace sewer pipe using open trench construction on NE 43rd Avenue between Burnside and Couch streets.
After completing pipe installation, crews will patch trenches used for construction with temporary pavement. Permanent patching will be scheduled during dry weather and as paving crews become available. Please be aware that schedules are subject to change due to a variety of factors, including conditions underground, weather, traffic impacts and subcontractor and materials availability. Trenchless sewer repairs using a method called Cured-in-Place Pipe-Lining (CIPP) are also scheduled to begin in May 2018.
CIPP lining is a trenchless method that requires little or no digging and significantly less time to complete. Work crews access the sewer from manholes to insert a flexible liner inside the old pipe. The liner is inflated with air and exposed to ultraviolet light (UV) to gradually cure and harden the liner. As the liner hardens, it forms a rigid, smooth surface that seals cracks and restores the pipe to near-new condition. Work in most locations is expected to take one to two days. More time may be required where spot repairs are needed or additional work is identified. CIPP lining is highly weather dependent. For this reason, the contractor has been given a large window to complete lining repairs. CIPP lining activity will be sparse during wet months and increase during dry months. Residents near each location will be notified in advance of work.
The Tabor CIPP lining work is scheduled to begin in Spring and all repairs are expected to be complete by Winter 2018. Work in most locations is expected to take one to two days. More time may be required where spot repairs are needed or additional work is identified.
